Writing:

In addition to the writing throughout this blog, I would like to supply an excerpt from my MA thesis, “Chinese State Media Coverage of Climate Change and the Future of China’s Food and Water Security.”  The research project was a synthesis of scientific data on glacier retreat/accretion activity in China, resulting freshwater supply impacts, and the implications of Chinese state media coverage on China’s role in contributing to and mitigating climate change.  The excerpt linked below is from the portion of the thesis focusing on Chinese media.  The relationship between media and political, expressive, and economic culture is one that drives my desire to learn more about the creation of media, and how those formulas are most effective in interacting dynamically with the cultural values of a society.

Art:

Most of the art production I do currently is in jewelry design.  Although I’ve taken many art classes (drawing, photography, painting), I prefer to make art that has an immediate purpose or use, whether for wearing or performing some other physical function, or for illustrating and communicating.  I have included photos here of some of my jewelry designs, in addition to a few pieces of drawing, painting, or photography projects I’ve completed.  Producing art is energizing for me, and I would embrace an opportunity to make and use art in conjunction with other projects, combining the two for the ultimate purpose of bending perception to change embedded thought patterns about the spectrum of, and perceived lines between, “nature,” “humanity,” “civilization,” and “technology.”

The following photos were from a project experimenting with multiple exposures in a hand-development lab, and under a theme of “‘Nature’ as opposed to…”

I am interested in the way we use our changeable facial topographies and expressions to convey feeling.  I am curious about the effect on an audience of carefully executed, appropriate facial expressions in media products.  The eye paintings were an exploration of how a single eye can intimate an entire facial expression.
